There are many reasons for using liquid CO2 in the plastics and rubber industry:

Modification of Raw materials:

Low molecular weight residues can be removed from plastics and rubber raw materials.

The mole weight distribution of liquid raw materials can be modified, e.g. narrowed.

Solvent traces can be removed from raw materials prior to further processing.




Treatment of injection-moulded and extruded parts:

Colour and additives can be impregnated into plastics and rubber.

SiOxmachines AB provides the modern alternative to treatment of rubber items in ovens or in extraction processes. We call it SiCure. Conventional processes consume a lot of electricity or use toxic / explosive solvents.

Mould-release agents and dirt can be washed away from injection moulded parts, Surfaces can be modified, coated and cleaned for downstream processes such as gluing, Materials can be made nano- or micro-porous or converted to foams.

Examples are water-repellant yet breathable membranes for textiles.

Some processes can be combined and integrated with injection moulding machines.




Coating of fillers and composites:

Filler materials can be made compatible and more adhesive to the matrix plastic.

Examples are plastic coated wood fibers for wood-plastic composites (WPC), coated glass or carbon fibers, surface modified glass fibers and carbon nano tubes (CNT). A polymer can be impregnated into another polymer, yielding an Interpenetrating Polymer Network (IPN) with novel properties.
